Can Oats Reduce High Cholesterol?
by Lauren S Johnson
confirmed that a diet rich in beta-glucan from oats can help to lower LDL levels
(otherwise referred to as bad cholesterol levels). Individuals who have high
cholesterol (above 220 mg/dl) can lower their numbers by 8 to 23 % simply by
consuming 3 grams of soluble oat fiber daily. 3 grams of soluble fiber can be easily
obtained through the consumption of just one bowl of oatmeal. As a matter of fact,
in 1997, the Food and Drug Administration authorized coronary heart disease risk
reduction health claim for beta- glucan soluble fiber from oat products. In order to be
effective, the product has to contain at least 0.75 g of beta glucan soluble fiber from
oats per serving. Some foods which fall into that category include: barley, dried bean,
dried peas, flax seed, fruits (oranges and apples), vegetables (carrots), and psyllium
seed husks.
Consuming a healthy diet such as this one can also help us lose weight. Obesity is yet
another culprit behind heart disease. That's why when we consume healthy meals,
such as a bowl of oats for breakfast, we reduce our risk of becoming overweight and
we keep our blood glucose levels stable. Aside from the (such as all
natural Hoodoba), healthy diet and exercise are a must for those individuals who are
interested in a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle.
