Hemp protein powder, or hemp meal as it is sometimes referred, is usually made with the by-product from the process of pressing hemp seeds into hemp oil. Once the oil is pressed from the seed, the remaining product, known as hemp cake, contains more than 25% protein and is an excellent source of dietary fibre. It also contains up to 35 % of the seed oil left after pressing, providing the health benefits of omega three and six–essential fatty acids. The hemp cake is then stone ground into a coarse meal or flour. Alternatively, it can be processed further to create a protein powder isolate.
Hemp seeds are power packed little gems, containing more Essential Fatty Acids in an almost perfect three to one balance for the human body, than any other plant. They are also a rich source of the eight amino acids essential for a healthy body and these same acids are the ones that the body has the inability to make on its own.
Hemp protein powder is easily digested, gluten free, high in fibre and contains needed minerals, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, copper, boron, iron, zinc, manganese, sulphur and chlorophyll and more.
So whether you choose hemp protein powder, hemp meal, hemp flour or even hemp cake, rest assured, you will be using one of nature’s best plant-based proteins.
Please note that current legislation prohibits the sale of hemp foods in Australia. All hemp seed products sold in Australia are for external use only and are not to be consumed internally. If you live in any other Western country, then feel free to enjoy the benefits that one of nature’s oldest super foods has to offer.
