Discover the Symptoms of ADHD

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity. However, a person with ADHD may not manifest all
these features. ADHD can be classified into three types: (a) Predominantly
Inattentive, (b) Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive and (c) Mixed/Combined Type.
Each feature may be shown by the child in various ways. To help you identify them,
here is a list of symptoms of ADHD.
1. Symptoms of Inattention
* the child fails to attend to details
* often commits mistakes from carelessness
* has problem sustaining his/her attention in a task
* appears to be not listening when spoken to
* has problems following instructions and may fail to finish assigned tasks which are
not due to compliance issues or inability to understand instructions
* has difficulty when it comes to organizing his actions during tasks
* has a knack of losing things
* always distracted
* appear to forgetful while doing daily activities
2. Symptoms of Hyperactivity
* the child is fidgeting with hands and feet or squirms in his/her seat
* the child likes being out of seat
* the child would usually run excessively in situations which is inappropriate
* the child talks excessively
* the child has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly
* the child is often "on the go" or acts "as if driven by motor"
3. Symptoms of Impulsivity
* The child would blurt out answers before questions have been completed
* The child has difficulty waiting for turn especially during games
* The child would interrupt or intrude on others (interrupts conversations or games)
This may serve as your checklist to see if your child has ADHD. However, this may
still be insufficient. To be sure, you should visit a developmental pediatrician or an
occupational therapist and have them evaluate your child. They are the supposed
experts when it comes to evaluation and treatment and they will be able to inform
you the things that you need to know about ADHD, its effects and the ways of
treating it. The doctor may provide you a list of medication. On the other hand, an
Occupational therapist may offer you a list of treatment strategies that does not
need or require use of drugs. However, all of these are meant to control or facilitate
the symptoms of ADHD and not for curing.
