Feeling Tired and Unhealthy?  Sleep Deprivation Could Be
Affecting Your Brain
by Lauren Potgieter
and mental health. When we sleep we rest our bodies and regenerate our brains. If
we spend weeks or months surviving on limited sleep, the neurons in our brain begin
to malfunction and not even a quick power nap will improve the symptoms of sleep
deprivation. The neurons in the cerebral cortex need certain levels of sleep in order to
regenerate whilst other levels of sleep are needed to form memories and produce
new synaptic connections.

Sleep deprivation affects the brain adversely, and recently experts have discovered
that lack of sleep can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Beta-amyloid plaque
forms in the brain, resulting in memory loss and extreme disorientation. Research
has found that lack of sleep increases the production of the Beta-amyloid plaque,
resulting in a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's.

As well as the long term affects on the brain, it also has short term affects, especially
in relation to memory and alertness. Your language, creativity and problem solving
abilities are also considerably impaired when you are deprived of sleep. Lack of sleep
does not only affect the functioning of the brain, but also the performance of the
body. Lack of sleep can result in an increased risk of heart problems, hypertension
and even certain forms of cancer. We all feel that we can fit more into our day if we
cut down on our sleep, but the truth is that we will likely pay for our sleep deprivation
in the future.

In a society where we have twice as much on our "to do" lists that must be
completed in half the time, it is easy to see why sleep deprivation is common. The
results of sleep deprivation could affect us in significant ways, resulting in problems of
the body and mind. So, we suggest that you climb back into your cloth upholstered
bed and get some rest.

We all know that sleep deprivation
can leave us irritable, exhausted and
even disorientated at times. But
many of us believe that this is where
the symptoms end. And, as much as
we miss our comfy contemporary
bed at times, we accept our tiredness
as an unavoidable component of our
busy lives. However, recent studies
have shown that sleep deprivation
causes a lot more than puffy eyes
and an aching body, as new evidence
shows that our brains could suffer
because of our lack of shut eye.

Sleep is important for our physical
