Fish Oil Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Prostate Cancer

A very serious threat to men is prostate cancer. Omega 3 fatty acids have been
proven to fight against several types of cancer, but it was only recently that studies
have linked omega 3 fats to the development of prostate cancer. The International
Journal of Cancer published the results of a research which shows that men who eat
one serving of salmon per week have a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer
by 43% compared to men who do not eat fish at all.

The study was conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and it involved
over 2,000 men, 1,500 of which suffering from this type of cancer and 1,000
healthy. Consuming omega 3 rich fish, such as salmon, reduced the overall risk of
developing prostate cancer by 43%.


The study also led to the conclusion that a certain gene present in only 60% of the
population has an influence on the omega 3 fatty acids' effectiveness in protecting
the body against cancer development.

The specialists who had carried out the study have concluded that a frequent
consumption of fatty fish and other marine sources of omega 3 fatty acids reduce
significantly the risk of prostate cancer development.

Fatty fish and fish oil are among the richest natural resources of omega 3 fatty acids
and changing your dietary habits to include more of these food help reduce the risks
of the apparition of numerous types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases. Compared to
omega 3 rich vegetables, fish contain the two types of fatty acids (EPA and DHA)
which the body can use in this form. Green leaf vegetables contain the ALA fatty acid,
which the body has to transform to EPA and DHA.

Although a very rare condition in men, breast cancer can also be prevented by
increasing the levels of omega 3 fatty acids in the body.
