blood pressure.

There are several high blood pressure herbal remedies as well as natural supplements
that can be used to reduce the need for drugs:

Garlic - Tests have shown that garlic supplements reduce pressure. If taking
prescription medicines such as warfarin or aspirin, however, garlic should be used
only under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner, as all of these
supplements are blood thinners.

Hawthorn - Used by herbal practitioners, this has been shown to work very well.
When given in addition to blood pressure medication, there were no herb/drug
reactions reported.

Turmeric - An Indian spice used in curries, it is an anti-inflammatory, lowers
cholesterol, is an antioxidant, and strengthens blood vessels as well as lowering
pressure.

Gingko biloba - A Chinese herbal remedy for hypertension that improves blood
circulation and dilates arteries. It also improves memory and mental alertness.

Olive leaf extract is one of a number of herbs for high blood pressure and can
combat irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia.

CoQ10 - A supplement of 60 mg taken twice daily has been found to lower pressure
after 12 weeks of treatment. Enzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance that is found
naturally in the body and is an essential nutrient for the proper functioning and well
being of the heart.

Maitake - From the Chinese mushroom. It reduces cholesterol and lowers both
diastolic and systolic pressures.

Vitamin E can help prevent heart disease. Used together with Vitamin C, it slows the
progression of atherosclerosis. When combined with vitamin B6, B12, and folic acid,
it helps lower the risk of heart disease.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids such as flax oil and cod liver oil are possibly even
better than fish oil because of the presence of fatty acids DHA and EPA, which are
shown to greatly improve heart health.

Fish oil - The DHA in fish oil helps to lower pressure, although it may only have a
modest effect.

Folic acid - Can help to reduce blood pressure, especially in smokers.

Calcium, magnesium, and potassium in the diet are also helpful for lowering blood
pressure.

The best way to lower blood pressure is to eat a healthy diet with fresh fruit and
vegetables. Cook with extra virgin olive oil and garlic, as they are shown to lower LDL
cholesterol. Reduce consumption of trans fats, but eat nuts, grains, and whole foods.

Although these natural remedies can help, it may be necessary to take them in
conjunction with prescription drugs and follow a healthy diet as suggested. An
exercise routine should also be followed. Exercise helps with blood flow and increases
metabolism. It is essential that a medical practitioner be consulted before taking any
herbs for high blood pressure or stopping the use of prescription drugs.
