Is Cod Fish Oil Safe For You?
by Didi Dyke
It is important to note that too much vitamin A in body fat is harmful and can cause
hypervitaminosis. Pregnant women are advised not to take cod oil because of its
high vitamin A content which has been proven to cause birth defects. In other words
cod liver oil is proven to contain unsafe amounts of vitamin A for pregnant women.
Studies also show that high consumption of cod liver oil by pregnant women can lead
to about five-fold increased risk of gestational hypertension. Note that what
differentiates cod-oil from fish oil is the high amount of vitamin A it contains. This
means that fish fatty acid is a better and safer source of DHA omega 3.
All the same you should make sure that the fish oil you are taking is pure so as not
to consume harmful contaminants such as mercury and lead. The only way you can
be sure of that is by taking fish oil supplements that are molecular distilled. You
should also buy those that have high amount of DHA omega 3 because that is where
most of the benefits of fishoil is derived.

Cod fish oil is extracted from the liver
of codfish and that is how it got the
name, cod liver oil; it is true that this
fatty acid is a major source of omega
3 fatty acid because of its high
content of EPA and DHA. Years back,
mothers regularly gave it to their
children because of the high dose of
vitamin D in it which makes their
bones strong; however it may not be
safe for you because it contains high
amount of Vitamin A. It is actually
possible that its vitamin A content is
more than the Recommended Dietary
Allowance (RDA) of vitamin A.
