Omega 3 Fatty Acid is Essential For Your Health
by Jennifer P. April
Studies show countries (like Japan) where the occupants eat a lot of omega 3's
suffer less dementia and Alzheimer's and they report an overall greater happiness
than countries who's citizens eat a lot of beef and other red meat.
In fact, I read a report where 80% of psychiatrists were prescribing fish oil
supplements to their patients to elevate their moods.
Why fish oil? Fish is rich in these necessary nutrients. You may have heard of fish
called "brain food". That's because fish is made up of about 30% of these fatty acids.
Concentrated fish supplements can have 60% or more of the nutrients you need.
The omega 3 fatty acid affects your brain because your brain has "pathways" where
messages need to travel and these pathways can get built up with plaque so that the
messages have a harder time to get through.
It's not unlike your heart's arteries. The American Heart Association recommends
heart patients take fish oil supplements because they're proven to keep your heart's
pathways clear. Clear arteries can prevent heart attacks. Research shows these
supplements may also lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.
And, studies show they reduce inflammation. Fish are natural anti-inflammatories.
Reducing inflammation can prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.
Of course, fish oil isn't the only way to get omega 3 fatty acid. You could simply eat
more fish. Nutrition experts suggest 2-3 fish meals a week for the average person.
Brussels sprouts, walnuts and olive oil are also full of these nutrients.
But if you're a heart patient you'll likely need more. So, cardiologists recommend
supplements.
Besides convenience, supplements have an added advantage. They can be more
pure than fish caught in polluted waters. Look for the fish supplements that have
been molecularly distilled and come from clean waters for maximum purity. And get
supplements with a high level of DHA and EPA for your brain's health.
