Reducing Stress Through What You Eat

eating spinach, which is rich in magnesium, can also help to lower stress.

Sweet potatoes are another great food for battling stressful situations. They contain
beta carotene as well as fiber, which help you to fight the urge to indulge in unhealthy
treats during times of stress. Because they are sweet carbohydrates, sweet
potatoes can be great for managing that sugar craving, helping to prevent you from
binging on cookies or candy while under a lot of stress. Another sweet treat that
works in the same way is dried apricots. Dried apricots are rich in magnesium, which
is a natural muscle relaxant.

Turkey can also help to reduce stress by producing a calming effect. This effect
results from the tryptophan that the turkey contains. Although this is known as the
amino acid that makes you feel tired after that Thanksgiving turkey, it is also good
for relaxing, because it triggers the release of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is
known as the feel-good chemical, making it essential for dealing with stress.

Salmon can also be helpful for maintaining brain chemistry. Because fish like salmon
contain omega-3 fatty acids, they can keep cortisol and adrenaline, two major stress
hormones, from peaking. Other important foods for stress relief include avocados
and walnuts. When you are feeling stressed, look to your refrigerator for a healthy
solution.
