Tips on How to Achieve an Optimal Alkaline Acid Balance
by Anita Karlson
An acid is a molecule or ion that can contribute a hydrogen ion to a solution. An
alkaline substance contains a molecule or ion that combines with hydrogen ions to
remove them from a solution - it neutralizes acids!
This means: An acid-forming food contributes hydrogen ions to the body making it
more acidic. An alkaline food removes hydrogen ions from the body making it more
alkaline!
Ideally our pH should stay on the alkaline side between 7.35 and 7.45. To achieve
this, our diet should consist of approximately 80 % alkaline foods and 20 % acidic
foods.
As a rule of thumb most vegetables, fruits and berries are alkaline foods, whilst
processed foods, meat, dairy products, soft drinks etc. are acidic foods. There are
several food lists available on the internet which in detail describes which foods are
alkaline and which are acidic.
Our western diet provides too many bread, meat and dairy products and to less
fresh fruits and vegetables. This leaves most of us with a too acidic body if we don't
watch our diet and make a conscious choice about what we eat.
The human body has stores of minerals (sodium, calcium, potassium and
magnesium) which it draws for alkaline material when it can't obtain them trough
diet. When our diet contains a too large proportion of acidic foods over too long a
period of time, our body is forces to borrow minerals from vital organs and bones to
neutralize the acid.
This leaves the body in a general weakened state and prone to illness. In an acidic
body, yeasts, bacteria, and viruses can thrive. And conversely, in an alkaline body,
foreign bacteria, viruses, and yeasts can not live.
Many physicists now claim that the underlying cause of all diseases is an imbalance in
the acid alkaline ratio in our body.
To achieve a healthy and long life it is very important to be aware of this vital balance
in our body, and make sure we choose a diet which maintains this balance.
Achieving a more alkaline body is not very difficult. Here are some simple tips
you can try out immediately to improve your balance:
- Remove coffee and soft drinks from your diet; substitute these with pure water
or for example ginger tea.
- Eat one large green salad each day.
- Choose dried berries or fruits when you get a craving for something sweet.
- Squeeze a lemon over your salad, fish or in your water.
- Choose a fruit salad for breakfast, and top it with chopped almonds and raisins.

It is important to understand the
impact acidic and alkaline foods have
on our bodies. Almost all foods we
eat will release either an alkaline or
acidic base into our body.
Acidity and alkalinity are measured in
pH (potential of hydrogen). The pH
scale goes from 0 to 14 where 0 is
the most acidic and 14 the most
alkaline. A pH of 7 is considered
neutral.
Keeping an acid and alkaline balance
means regulating the hydrogen ion
concentration in our body.
