Uncover Alternatives For Treating ADHD While at Home
by Puneet Aggarwal
Feingold. The Feingold diet consists of foods not containing certain artificial flavors or
colors, salicylates, and some petroleum-based preservatives. Although some food
coloring like FD&C Dyes are certified by FDA, this certification states that these
contain the acceptable amounts of contaminants like mercury, lead, benzidine and
arsenic. Thus, this means that they may still contain these contaminants. This is
significant because such contaminants are known to cause damage or alteration to
the neurologic development of a child. With the elimination of such substances in the
food that your child with ADHD eat, the Feingold diet does not only help regulate the
behavior of your child but also keeps him/healthy.
The Feingold Diet is known to have helped people with conditions like Autism,
Asperger's Syndrome, Seizures, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Attention
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. However, despite its benefits, there are still
issues regarding such a program. One of these is the fact that with the elimination of
such foods, there will be a limited choice of food to eat, and most are expensive.
These foods are also supposed to be cooked from scratch thus takes more time to
prepare. In response to this, the Feingold Association has released a list of food
brands that they consider safe and also Dr. Feingold released a cookbook with
acceptable recipes in it. There is also the issue of psychological or emotional effects
of the diet with the children because they may feel deprived of the foods that they
may want to eat. These issues, I think are the ones that parents like you should
answer. Actually, almost all approaches to treat ADHD has issues and you as a
parent of a child with ADHD has the right and the choice to choose from a list of
alternatives for treating ADHD, especially the ones done at home.
So having known this, if you believe in this program, then you may start being a
member of the Feingold Association and/or read up more about the subject. There is
also no harm in asking your child's doctor about it so that you will hear a professional
opinion that you know you can trust.
