Walking is Beneficial Exercise For Healthy Lungs

of the body.
First, be sure that your doctor says you are able to begin taking walks, and he
probably will say 'good for you'. Start with short walks, maybe 10 minutes or so if
you haven't walked for awhile. It will take a while for your legs and lungs to
strengthen. Keep at it and add distance and time week by week. Eventually increase
your pace to a fast walk until you are out of breath. Maintain that pace for a few
days or until breathing becomes easier before increasing your speed or distance.
Remember to breathe. It's amazing how often you will find yourself holding your
breath as you go through your day. When you are walking count the steps you take
while you inhale, then exhale to twice the number of steps. This makes sure that
your lungs are emptying with each breath and increases their flexibility. Inhale
through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Don't force the air out, do it
comfortably.
Walking out in the open air, among trees and foliage especially is wonderful. Deep
breathing at this time helps to aid the lungs in protecting the body from the toxins
and pollutants that may be in the air.

We all know how to breathe, right?
Of course, it takes no thought, it just
happens as a reflex of our body's
ability to maintain itself. Well, it
seems that most of us do not take
advantage of all of the power of our
lungs while we are using this
automatic function. Most people are
breathing in a very shallow way using
only the tops of the lungs, so when
called upon for more oxygen while
walking fast or if running is needed,
the lungs are not able to respond.
Lungs need to be taxed regularly to
maintain their health and ability to
process oxygen efficiently to the rest
