Why You Should Not Use Cod Liver Oil

an as-needed basis. There is no possibility of ingesting too much beta-carotene.
What the body does not use will be discarded.
Pregnant women should not take cod liver oil because of the vitamin A content. It
has been shown to cause birth defects. Excessive intake over long periods of time
leads to liver problems, osteoporosis, hair loss, high blood pressure and dry skin.
Another reason that cod oil is not a good choice for dietary supplementation has to
do with pollution. Fish are exposed to large amounts of mercury, PCBs, dioxins and
other contaminants, because of pollution. These toxins are stored in the livers of the
fish. Much higher concentrations are present in livers than in the flesh of fatty fish.
Everyone can benefit from omega 3 supplementation. Most people don't get enough
in their daily diets. But, the best choices for omega 3 supplementation are oils that
have been extracted from the flesh of the fish, not the livers. There is a specific kind
of fish, called the hoki that has a long strip of fat running down the center of each
filet. Hoki is found in the waters around New Zealand, some of the cleanest waters
on Earth.
Cod liver oil is actually a byproduct of fish meal production. Most of it comes from
the Atlantic Ocean. Because industrialization in the areas surrounding the Atlantic, it is
one of the most polluted oceans in the world. The Environmental Defense Fund
suggests that we avoid eating Atlantic Cod because of PCBs, dioxins and mercury
contamination.
Increasing your omega 3 intake can reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, high
cholesterol and rheumatoid arthritis. It is beneficial for people with osteoarthritis, as
well, because it has natural anti-inflammatory activity. It is important for brain health,
beneficial for people suffering from depression, anxiety, hyperactivity and learning
problems.
Years ago, cod liver oil may have been a good choice for supplementation, but not
today. Today, we have better choices. Give hoki fish oils a try.

researching omega 3 fatty acids in detail.

Cod liver oil is not a good choice for
the dietary supplementation of
omega3 fatty acids for several
reasons. Not the least of which is the
high vitamin A content. Vitamin A is
essential to the human diet, but the
type present in the liver, retinoid, is
toxic, if intake is excessive. And it's
not too hard to get to excessive
levels.
The source of vitamin A supplements
should be vegetables. Carotenoids,
such as beta-carotene, are not toxic,
even in large amounts. The body
converts carotenoids to vitamin A on
