Eco-Living - Making Eco Friendly Choices In The Supermarket
by Amor Lotz
amount of waste is accumulating at a rapid speed. Plastic, which takes at least 100
years to degrade fills majority of landfill space. This is not only toxic to the
environment; it also seeps into our water resources and damages soil. When you
purchase products, observe the packaging. Some products use recycled packaging,
whereas other use plastic. By choosing the packaging with the least plastic you are
making a personal and profound stance as a consumer.
2. Organic.
Food is not what it used to be. However buying organic makes a huge difference.
Through demand increasing for organic goods, it is most likely that prices for organic
products will reduce as a result of consumer need. Organic food is more nutrient rich
than "normal" food and is without those nasty pesticides and herbicides.
3. Palm Oil.
The deforestation that is occurring for palm oil, is not only destroying our millions of
acres of rainforests, it is killing thousands of orangutans too. Steer clear of any
products containing palm oil. You will be surprised when you see the ridiculous
amount that unnecessarily use this limited resource.
4. Shopping Bags.
Bring your own cloth shopping bag. Trendy and practically a necessity in France,
personal shopping bags, are becoming the international must-have for supermarket
shopping. This small but useful decision could have you saving almost 100 plastic
bags a year.
5. Fair Trade & Logo's.
When products are eco-friendly, environmentally friendly and ethical, they will often
display a logo of certification. These Logo's are varied across the world. Look at the
bottom and back label of the product to find if it meets environmental and humanistic
standards.
6. Free Range.
When you're not buying organic, but free range instead. It ensures a better quality
food and of course is a far more ethical option than non-free range. Non free-range
animals are often ill and diseased. Hmm, not so great for chicken stir-fry huh?
7. Chemicals.
Many foods are loaded with nasty chemicals and preservatives. Buy fresh were
possible, and look out for brands that have less chemicals and preservatives. Often
they cost more, but are substantially healthier as well as tasting better.
8. Recycling.
When you are shopping, keep in mind which packaging is possible to recycle. Tins,
cardboard, glass and paper packaging are all recycle friendly. There are many
different brands of the product you want, so why not buy the most environmentally
friendly one?
9. Local.
By supporting local wholesalers and manufacturers you are not only supporting your
economy, you are showing that you care about the environmental effects of
importation. Now is the time to be patriotic.
10. Standards.
Old your standards high when shopping. Research and Boycott products that are
harmful, inhumane and unethical. Your choice as a consumer does have an
enormous impact. Remember your choice contributes to hundreds, which in turn
makes a statement for change.
As Mahatma Gandhi once said: "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
