I am sure you have heard that drinking enough water is a good rule of thumb when it comes to weight loss. And you have probably also heard that drinking eight to sixteen ounces of water before each meal will also help with weight loss – but how much of that is true, and how much is hype?

According to research done by a Virginia Tech professor, drinking plenty of water through the day may actually help you lose weight. It has been found and reported on that people who drank at least two glasses of water within 20 to 30 minutes of a meal lost weight more quickly than those who do not drink water before a meal.

In a separate study publisher in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association it was found that people who drank water before meals ended up consuming 75 less calories during that meal. That may not sound like a lot, but 75 calories each meal is 225 less calories a day, or nearly 1600 calories a week you can cut out of your diet just by drinking some water!

Lastly, it has been shown that your body does not know the difference between hunger and thirst. So, when you are feeling hungry drinking some water can curb the appetite and satiate your body as if you have eaten. This is part of the reason why drinking water before each meal is so effective, you are “tricking” your body into thinking it is getting part of a meal. Also, it is said that drinking warm water or tea also helps curb the appetite, so if water is not your thing go for tea instead and still get the benefits.

Even with all the research some people still question whether or not too much water is in fact too much of a good thing. And the short answer is yes, drinking entirely too much water over the course of a day will negate many of the positive benefits of drinking water. Now, it is important to know that we are not talking about eight or nine glasses of water a day as being excessive, but hundreds of ounces, so most of us have nothing to worry about there.

There you have it, what we knew all along backed up by research. The answer is yes, in fact, drinking enough water each and every day will help you lose weight, and consume less calories. So what are you waiting for? Head to the kitchen and fill your glass up!
