Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes
by Dr. Brad Barez
we now live in an anti-biotic and anti-bacterial world. Everything from hand soap to
bedding to cattle feed is laced with antibiotics. Most kids can't even walk into the
grocery store without them, and the shopping cart, being "typhooned" with
antibacterial wipes, sprays, and soaps!
You want to know the real result of all this? It's poor health. The truth is "The Germ
Theory" along with poor nutrition is likely the biggest cause of our horrible health
today. This is why probiotics are so crucial to our everyday diet. They combine
nutritional and digestive health with immune health. Reality is that we do not get
healthier by avoiding germs. In fact, "germs" are more numerous in our bodies than
any other type of cell... and we have TRILLIONS of cells in our bodies!
Probiotics, or "good bugs", are responsible for a multitude of health-promoting
actions in our body. Their main actions are really two fold. First, to help us
breakdown, absorb, and utilize the foods we eat. This is where the digestive
enzymes also come into play if needed. Secondly, probiotics are actually one of our
best defenses against "bad bugs" that we ingest. Without probiotics we cannot
properly digest our food or support our immune system. The negative consequences
of this are widespread and can be linked to everything from acid reflux, ADHD,
allergies, and asthma. And those are just the A's!

So while I wish we could get these wonderful creatures in our normal day to day diet,
my experience on the farm (and reality) shows us that thanks to pesticides,
herbicides, and antibiotic everything, they just are no longer available in enough
quantity to help us. This makes daily supplementation crucial to our health and
well-being. So, along with avoiding highly sprayed foods and antibiotic drugs and
products, taking a probiotic supplement will do you and your children a lot of good!
I have been strongly recommending
probiotics since the day I began
practice, and for many reasons. As I
mention many times when discussing
nutrition, growing up on a farm made
me realize how poor our food quality
really is in the United States. Thanks
to a fear-invoking health care
system, we now live in great fear of a
certain family of little creatures -
BACTERIA!
From the moment we are born, we
are taught that bacteria (commonly
called germs or "bugs") are bad and
the root of all illness. Thanks to this
